When Megan Roberts’ husband received a one dollar an hour pay raise at his diesel mechanic’s job, things went bad quickly. The family was now deemed too affluent for Medicaid, food stamps, and housing assistance. They fell deep into a poverty trap. When Megan’s appendix burst, she was landed with $96,000 in medical bills. Two years later, the then-31-year-old Megan came down with pancreatic cancer. Despite having private medical insurance, the treatments left her with another $180,000 in medical bills.
