Jorge - poverty - Doña Ana, New Mexico

Jorge used to work in construction before his diabetes rendered him unfit to work. He lives in Chapparal Colonia, the largest of 37 colonias in the southern New Mexican counties of Doña Ana and Otero. These informal settlements, many lacking sewage connections and paved roads, some lacking electricity, running water and gas connections, are lived in by impoverished migrants. Jorge lives in a trailer with his wife. Some of the trailers in the community house up to eighteen people. Here he discusses life in the colonia.
