For more than thirty years Donna Knapple had worked a number of administrative jobs; for local colleges and, more recently for a company that contracted out janitorial services. Three years ago, her health failing, she was laid off. Unable to find work, either in administration, or simply working for the local potato processing plant, she ended up moving into a small house, in the run-down town of Caldwell, with her sister and elderly father. Fifty eight years old, she talks about the sense of hopelessness she feels, and the pain of losing her independence.
