Cruzanta Mercado and Paul Abiley live with their three year old son in a plywood home that they built on the edge of the bush, in the Puna District of Hawaii’s Big Island. The house is heated by a propane stove, when there is money for the gas, and provided with a few hours of electricity from a generator—again, when there is money for fuel. The toilet is a commode. The young couple have been through the criminal justice system, they have lived out of a car. Now, both are employed and trying to make a future for their family.
