For the past fourteen years, Ai-Jen Poo had worked to organize domestic workers, people whom she terms a “shadow economy.” Since 2007, when she co-founded the National Domestic Workers Alliance in 2007, she has been the organization’s executive director, pushing for state and federal reforms to bring the domestic worker labor force under workplace regulations. In California and elsewhere, the group has been pushing for the enactment of Domestic Workers’ Bills of Rights. Here she talks about the movement for reform and its broader implications for the American workforce.
